The vista as you reach the rim of the canyon extends in all directions with sandstone spires capped with limestone, creating the hoodoos through water erosion at this specific altitude of 7,600 feet. Higher up and it freezes too much, lower and it's not the ideal conditions to create these intriguing formations. Silent city (first shot) conjures up the Paiute Indian folkore that bad people inhabited the canyon and Coyote, the trickster God, invited them all to a feast and turned the bad people into stone.
